湖南美术馆位于湘江西岸、岳麓山下，潇湘大道与靳江路交汇处，毗邻中南大学，与橘子洲头隔水相望，占地面积50000多平方米，建筑面积24700多平方米，总投资3.98亿元。建筑空间格局以“三湘四水”为基本意象，主体建筑采用环保新颖的赭红色与白色定制陶板和周边环境相融合，既厚重古朴又简洁现代，彰显出湖湘人文底蕴与红色文化基因的独特魅力。展馆由展览区、公共服务区、学术研讨区、藏品管理区、办公区等区域组成，其中展厅总面积7200平方米，展线可达1800延米，最大展厅面积近1000平方米，展厅最高净空8米，采用国家重点美术馆标准进行展览流线规划和国际一流专业美术馆智能化灯光系统设计，是集展览陈列、收藏保护、学术研究、教育推广、对外交流、文化服务等功能于一体的现代化、综合性美术馆。
